It seems like every day is there is a "National Day." Just in the first few days of October I guess I missed National Homemade Cookies Day (October 1st), National Name Your Car Day (October 2nd), National Golf Lover's Day (October 4th), and National Get Funky Day (October 5th). One day that we should all pay attention to is World Smile Day. Thanks to our Operation Smile group, I now know this day exists. World Smile Day happens the first Friday in October each year and is designed to promote kind acts throughout the world. Harvey Ball, a commercial artist from Worcester, Massachusetts created the smiley face in 1963. That image went on to become the most recognizable symbol of good will and good cheer on the planet. As the years passed Harvey Ball became concerned about the over-commercialization of his symbol, and how its original meaning and intent had become lost in the constant repetition of the marketplace. Out of that concern came his idea for World Smile Day®. He thought that we, all of us, should devote one day each year to smiles and kind acts throughout the world. The smiley face knows no politics, no geography and no religion. Harvey’s idea was that for at least one day each year, neither should we. He declared that the first Friday in October each year would henceforth be World Smile Day®. Ever since that first World Smile Day® held in 1999, it has continued every year in Smiley's hometown of Worcester, MA and around the world. So what do you do on World Smile Day? It's something we should do every day. Do an act of kindness, help a person smile. Various research articles indicate that smiling helps with following:
It's been nice seeing smiles to kick off the school year. Seeing our teachers smile, seeing our students smile, seeing parents smile. Smiles go a long way in brightening up a person's day. In fact, didn't you know that smiles is the longest word in the English language? There's a mile in between the first and last letters. See....made you smile! I'll try and smile all the way to Sunday and then figure out what to do on National Moldy Cheese Day---Yuck!!
